Great Plains Round Up

This weekend we went to a Corvair show up in Excelsior Springs, MO called the Great Plains Round Up. We went last year, too, when it was in Tulsa. This show moves around to different cities, so different car clubs take responsibility for showing off their city and coming up with fun things for attendees to do.

The main draw is the cars. There were 62 cars this year, all Corvairs. Corvairs are not just cars though, there are also rampside trucks and vans, and the cars may be coupes or sedans, hard top or convertible, or station wagon.

And then there are the custom cars. Corvairs have a flat 6 engine in the back of the car. See the difference with this motor? A V-8 in the front of the car!

We stayed at the Elms, which is an historic hotel/resort/spa that was first built in the late 1800s. This is actually the third version of the hotel as the first two burned to the ground in the early 1900s.

Glad to see we weren't the only half-finished car in attendance.

 Remember which one is ours?
Downtown, the local museum had a Corvair show up. These are "people" made from various Corvair parts.
Excelsior Springs was known back in the day for their healing waters. This was one of the bath houses. I was told it pretty much shut down after the flood of 1993.

One of the big events is the valve cover races.

The hotel is a little creepy looking at night, huh?
Saturday we went to Van Till Winery to eat dinner as a group. We met some new friends and split a bottle of wine - Ponderosa Mist. The pizza was baked in a wood fired outdoor oven and the toppings were all local/organic.

The hubs finished the suicide door on the passenger side. Definitely got some "wows", even from the old guys. Last year, our first year, we were a little worried about getting shunned for having such a ratty car. But everyone loved it!

Saturday night was the awards banquet, and dessert was this custom cake!

Can't wait for next year when it's in Oklahoma City (except for the long drive!)

More photos from Curry's Hot Rod Spring Fling Show

The car that was parked across from us, an old Suburban. The Owner hasn't restored it yet, and he lets his kids play around with it, hence the finger painting on the inside of the hood. The passenger side of the truck has a tic-tac-toe game scratched into the paint.

This is our baby, a 1968 Chevy Corvair. I said Corvair, NOT Corvette. The guy in the photo is our friend Jesse.

This show is at Curry's Hot Rods in Nixa. He restores old cars and does amazing paint jobs. I'm not sure which of these motorcycles he painted; I forgot to look for his tag.

The seat on this motorcycle says "Half Breed."

This is the Heaven/Hell motorcycle. This is the Heaven side. There are Bible verses hidden in the paint.

If you look toward the middle and bottom of the waterfall, there are two Revelations verses. The one at the bottom of the waterfall says Rev 22:1.

On the building above Jesus's head, it says Rev 3:20-22, and Eph 1:7.

This is the Hell side. I couldn't find any Bible verses, so I didn't take any close up shots.
Actually, I just found one, in the chain link on the dragon's collar: Rev 20:1-2.

Do I need to say this motorcycle is owned by a preacher?

Spring Fling at Curry's Hot Rod shop

Summer is almost here, which means at least one car show a month until fall. Our first car show was yesterday at Curry's Hot Rods in Nixa. The owner, Nathan Curry, is a really nice guy, probably about the Hub's age and he does amazing work. Most of the car shows we go to raise money for a charity. This one raised money for the Ozarks Honor Flight, which flies WWII veterans to DC to see the war memorial.

Here is 54 Ford pickup, very similar to Grandpa Fluegge's truck that I've been trying to restore since I was a teenager.

Here's a 56 Ford pickup, the same year at Grandpa's truck. The difference is that my truck is an F-350 and the one pictured here is an F-100.

I have more photos of other vehicles, but they will have to wait for another post. My phone didn't want to upload anymore photos!
