JK Wedding Entrance Dance

I am all for non-traditional weddings.

My wedding was in a hay field, soon after square bales were baled.
I rode in on my Dad's tractor, on the left fender. I used to ride around on the tractor fender like this when I was little. However, Dad waxed the tractor for the wedding. Probably it's first and only wax job ever. Which made it a little tricky/slippery in a silk dress.

I didn't want anyone all gussied up in tuxedos. The men wore khakis and white shirts, and Dad wore his bolo tie. In the invitations we encouraged everyone to dress casual.
We got married barefoot!

And my Uncle's played electric guitar versions of Pachelbel's Canon in D, The Wedding March, and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring.

We had a bonfire to keep it a little warm. It was late October, after all!

Food was BBQ catered in from a local joint. For dessert we had 5 cakes, 4 of which were made by Grandma Ettling: Spice Cake w/ Penuche Icing, Chocolate with Cream Cheese Icing, Golden Cake with White icing, and Angel Food cake. (She actually made fifth: white cake with pineapple filling and coconut icing, but it fell out of the cake carrier and was covered in grass.) I also got a sugar free cheesecake for all the diabetics in my family from My Daddy's Cheesecake, which tasted just as good as their sugared cheesecake. And Grandma also made her famous cream cheese mints. I need to make sure those are in the family recipe book!
The wedding guests rode down to the hayfield on hay wagons. I'd like to say our wedding went off without a hitch but that would be a lie! Halfway down the hill one of the wagons came unhitched from the tractor. No one was hurt, but the situation definitely made me aware that nothing can be planned and executed to the letter.

I think your wedding day should be a reflection of who you are as a couple. If a stuffy church wedding isn't your thing, you shouldn't force yourself to go through that ceremony even if your family wants you to have a traditional wedding. I intended for my wedding to involve a lot less organization than a church wedding but in reality it probably took more. I included a map with each invitation so wedding guests wouldn't get lost. (The farm, especially three years ago, barely had any cell phone reception.) We picked up the catering so it wouldn't get lost on the way. The photographer did get lost, even though she was an old high school friend who had been to my house numerous times. We had to plan for the unexpected rainshower by borrowing an events tent from the church. We rented a porta potty so city-folk didn't have to pee in the woods. We used walkie-talkies to communicate all day. the Hubs and I were within 1/2 mile of each other nearly the entire day as we were preparing for festivities and still didn't see each other in our wedding attire until the processional song started.

Baking powder biscuits

Decided to bake biscuits this morning. There was a chill in the house, even with the heater on. These are called Baking Powder Biscuits, and are from the Taste of Home Baking Book my friend Amanda gave me several years ago.
Notice the funny looking large biscuit in the background?
That was the leftover dough, and honestly prior to baking it looked the same size as the cookie cutter biscuits. Fooled me when it baked though!
What I was really hungry for was cheesy biscuits, like what they serve at Red Lobster. However, the recipe called for buttermilk which I don't typically keep in the house. (I will pretty soon, though, when I make buttermilk ranch dressing for all the greens in the garden!)

Baking Powder Biscuits

2 c. all purpose flour
2 Tbsp sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c shortening
1 egg
2/3 c milk

In a large bowl (I used my Pampered Chef 8 cup bowl), mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in the shortening until mixture is crumbly. (I used a pastry blender that I bought at a flea market, that was similar to this one.
Beat egg and milk. Stir into dry ingredients until just moistened.
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll to 1/2" thickness.
Cut biscuits with 2-1/2" biscuit cutter. Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 450 for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

We topped the biscuits with Amish apple butter from the farmer's market and ate them with (cheddar) cheesy eggs.

May flowers!

Apparently year three is when flowers decide to bloom. This is the third summer since we've moved to this house and the first time the peonies and yucca have bloomed! The irises also are blooming, but they bloomed last year, although not as much. These are all flowers from the farm. Hopefully the resurrection lilies will bloom too. They've put up green for the last three years but have yet to bloom.

The irises are looking a little sad because we has some wind and rain. And ignore the PVC pipe. We use that to direct the A/C water off the front porch so it doesn't rot out the wood decking.

I was pretty sure I dug up/transplanted pink peonies from the farm, but these are white!

Garden Report 05.13.11

Yesterday, blogger was down, so you get two days worth of harvest today!

Yesterday:
4 oz. strawberries

Today:
5 oz strawberries
2.5 oz mixed greens
1 oz spinach

Total to date:
24 oz strawberries
4.5 mixed greens
13 oz spinach

I should note that the mixed greens are "baby greens" now. They are small and there aren't very many of them, but I know soon there will be soooo many that I will have to share with coworkers!

Yesterday, I also went on a bike ride. 3.04 miles in 20 minutes, average speed of 9.16 mph. Next week is bike to work week but I'm not sure if that will be happening. It's supposed to be colder and I have to drive to West Plains on Monday for a client meeting... We'll see as it gets closer. I was hoping for another "training" ride today, but it has been drizzling all afternoon.

Last night the seedlings stayed in the greenhouse. I've been leaving them on the back stoop during the day to get acclimated but last night I decided to leave them out. It probably stayed pretty warm in there. It's usually 20-30 degrees warmer inside the greenhouse than the outside temperature. I watered them with 1/2 strength fish emulsion fertilizer. That's probably the third time I've done so this season.

Mmmm spinach and strawberries!

Today I rode 2.21 miles in 14.20 minutes. It seemed like a longer ride than the last one, but was shorter by 1/3 of a mile... Average was 9.26 mph. Next week is bike/bus/walk to work week here in Springfield and I was aiming for that to be my first week to ride to work. Next week is also when they start working on our parking garage and if I drive I have to walk farther...

I harvested another 3 oz. of strawberries today. That brings the strawberry total to 15 oz.

Dinner tonight has some ingredients from the garden (the spinach, mixed greens and strawberries). I also added leftover chicken breast and steamed broccoli, and feta cheese and dressed it with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, S&P and basil.

You can take the girl out of the country but...

... (You should know the rest of this) you can't take the country out of the girl.
My brother with the white cat he has (non-politically correctly) named "Kracker". If you've never met a drooling cat, you have now. This cat purs and then leaves drool all over. And he sheds. A lot.

Check out the air Daniel got jumping over the electric fence! Dad and Daniel were trying to get a calf on the correct side of the electric fence. The calf looked pretty frazzled, like frizzy hair; he probably touched the electric wire a couple times.

Moo!

One of those views I never get tired of.

One of those things I can do without: ticks. The dot in the middle is a tick. For scale, a stick pin on the right, and on the left a dot made by a ball point pen. This guy was little!

In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to convert an AMR audio file to a video file format that youtube supports... Anyone have any ideas?
